Volunteer community leaders from all parts of our local community govern United Way of Johnson County as our Board of Directors. Volunteers also participate in United Way through their service on the Community Impact Council (Fund Distribution Panel), Campaign Team, Agency and Community Needs Committee, Strategic Planning Committee, Marketing Committee, Planned Giving and Endowment Committee, Internal Operations Committee, Resource Development Committee, Loaned Executive Team, Speakers Bureau, and Workplace Campaign Teams.

The United Way Board of Directors employs a staff of five to raise funds, manage the organization, and provide services, such as identifying community needs, providing management assistance to affiliated agencies, and distributing in-kind goods and services. United Way of Johnson County Iowa is an independent, nonprofit organization overseen by a local volunteer Board of Directors.
