The Crisis Center of Johnson County

Provides immediate support through the 24-Hour Crisis Line and Chat services. Available by phone 24/7; walk-in counseling offered from 9am - 10pm. Specializes in suicide prevention and intervention services, and hosts a monthly support group for individuals who have lost someone to suicide. Distributes weekly supplemental food bags and vouchers for clothing and household items. Offers limited financial assistance to avoid eviction or loss of utilities. Provides suicide prevention training for individuals, groups and businesses and responds to natural disasters that affect the community with recovery assistance. Elder Services provides a wide array of programs, services, and resources to assist persons age 60 and over in Johnson County to stay active, independent, and safe in their own homes. We serve as a centralized, one-stop information, referral, and assistance center for services such as: Elderly Waiver Case Management, Elder Abuse Initiative, Premier Care (private-pay case management), Elder Answers (information and referral), RSVP (Retired and Senior Volunteer Program), Nutrition (Meals on Wheels, Senior Dining, and Rural Meal Delivery), and Chore (interior and exterior home assistance). Four Oaks is dedicated to its mission to help children become successful adults. Prevention programs include after-school programs, assisting with self-sufficiency, and in-home prevention. A self-serve breakfast of coffee and toast is offered in the mornings, and lunch is served Monday through Saturday from noon to 1 p.m. Meals are served in the basement of the Wesley Center by 37 different volunteer groups. HACAP, a Community Action Program, is responsible for developing and delivering Iowa’s anti-poverty plan for Benton, Iowa, Johnson, Jones, Linn and Washington counties. MECCA offers evaluation, outpatient, residential and detoxification substance abuse services for individuals and their families. Education and prevention services include consultation and assistance to schools, employers and community groups as well as a 12-hour Drinking and Driving education course. Programs include: The Iowa Center for AIDS Resources and Education (ICARE), which provides comprehensive support to persons living with HIV/AIDS, their family, friends and concerned others; and Problem Gambling Services, which offers prevention, assessment & evaluation, counseling, transitional housing and continuing care. National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) of Johnson County, a grassroots organization that has affiliates across the country as well as in Johnson County, offers education, support, and advocacy for persons with mental illness (consumers) and their families. Evidenced-based educational classes are provided for families/significant others, consumers, care providers, and the general public. Community, state, and national resources are available depending on the needs of those served. Peer support is available by phone, at group meetings, or individually. NAMI advocates at the local, state, and national levels to improve the lives of all those affected by mental illness, which is the entire community. NAMI of Johnson County currently works with the school system, the criminal justice system, local businesses, and many other UW agencies to educate, support, and advocate. Neighborhood Centers of Johnson County offers neighborhood and school-based services and activities for children and families in low-income areas of Johnson County. Pathways provides adults with health challenges the chance to continue to live at home and prevent or delay out-of-home placement. Stimulating group activities are offered featuring educational programs, exercise, computer access, art, gardening and culinary groups. Professional services are available including nursing services, medication management, personal care, occupational, physical and speech therapy. Transportation to and from the facility is available and meals are included based on the hours an adult attends. Services also provide caregivers the ability to continue working or have a much needed break in their routines. Website

RVAP provides a 24-hour Rape Crisis Line (335-6000 or 800-228-1625) and the Iowa Sexual Abuse Hotline (800-284-7821). Advocates provide medical, legal, court, and systems advocacy, counseling, support groups, and other direct services to victims/survivors of sexual abuse and their partners, friends and family members. UAY offers family mediation and therapy for youth and their parents, to address family conflict, communication, depression, anxiety, trauma and grief. UAY operates a Youth Center located at 355 Iowa Avenue in downtown Iowa City that is open Monday through Saturday. The Youth Center includes a recording studio, art studio, art gallery, performance space, offices for street outreach and the Rotary Center for Youth Volunteers.
